We typically bisque fire to cone 04 and glaze fire to cone 6. If you would like to fire to a different temperature, you need to rent out the whole kiln. We do not fire beyond cone 6 because of the added wear and tear on the kilns.
Yes! We can fire luster and overglaze decals onto ceramics or glass. We do not regularly fire to luster or overglaze decal temperatures, so you will need to rent out the whole kiln. Luster firings may be done in our test kilns, but overglaze decals must be fired in one of our larger digital kilns. Additionally, you must provide a firing schedule for overglaze decal firings. Different overglaze decal manufacturers have different specific firing schedules.
We welcome members and outside artists to fire work in the studio
Our staff will help determine which kiln is most appropriate. If you are firing less than a full kiln, we will determine the best kiln based on our firing schedule and the pieces that we have ready to fire.
If work is brought to us bone dry, our typical turnaround time is 1 week. Work that is still wet must be left to dry in the studio and will only be fired when our staff determines that is it safe to do so. Rush firings cost an additional $65 and have a turnaround time of around 2 days. The vast majority of kiln firings go smoothly; however, unexpected delays may occur and we are not able to guarantee a specific pickup day. We strongly recommend that artists do not wait till the last minute to fire time-sensitive work.
We need to know the exact clay body and glazes you are using, and the temperature you would like to fire them at. Our kilns are a significant investment and the risk of overfiring work is when working with unknown clay bodies or glazes. We can test small amounts of wild or unknown clay bodies in a safe, controlled manner. Please contact us at info@yayclay.com before bringing in any test samples.
We reserve the right to refuse any work. We may refuse work that may risk damage to the kiln from excessive thickness, moisture content, or unknown/dangerous ingredients. Please contact us before firing anything with unusual or unknown ingredients. We may fire it as long as we can assess that there is no risk or that the risk can be mitigated. Paperclay is welcome, but please discuss any material requiring burnout before bringing it in. We welcome creative expression, but we will not fire work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, hateful, or discriminatory in nature. Work that is sexual or contains profanities is allowed, but please be discrete and keep the work covered as we may have children in the studio.
You are responsible for ensuring that your work is marked for the correct firing temperature and constructed properly so that it does not melt or explode. You are responsible for any damages to the kiln or other work caused by a meltdown or explosion.
Very rarely. Firing greenware with a glaze on it presents us with a risk to the kilns and other work in the kilns that is very difficult to mitigate. If a piece of greenware blows up with glaze on it, the damage to the kiln and other work in the kiln can be devastating. Exceptions to this rule are very rare and are not granted without significant testing. We will not single fire work if the sole motivation is to meet a deadline.
